General description:
One of the overshadowed cards from Gladiator’s Assault booster pack, Soul Taker is the first of the Shueisha promos to be released and made available for international play.
Uses:
Soul Taker lets you destroy any face up opponent’s monster and that too, by giving your opponent 1000Lp. It is, however, better than removal cards like Smashing Ground or Hammer Shot in the sense that you actually get to choose which monster to destroy.
With the new synchro/tuner monsters, monster removal will become essential in all decks, so expect to meet this card more often!
Strategies and game play:
The main reason why this card is not used, besides its rarity(I’ve seen people begging to get one
), is for the life-gaining downside. While 1000Lp can cost you the game, if used wisely, Soul Taker can result in a net loss of lifepoints for your opponent or a net gain for you. For example, you can blow away his 3000Def monster then strike for game with your army of 2400 Atk monarchs, or you can destroy a monster which will inevitable attack you next turn.
Combos with other cards:
Being meant for monster removal only, Soul Taker works well on its own. His strength lies in the right timing for its use, but nevertheless it can combo with some cards.
Reficule Nurse Of Darkness and Bad Reaction to Smoochi
They will both turn the lifepoint gain to damage instead.
So this card will work well in Bad Reaction decks along with Gift Card and such likes.
The agent cards
Using the Bad Reaction strategy, the agent Saturn and Mars gain unimaginable attack power.
Life Equaliser
Using a single copy of Soul Taker, you can activate Life Equaliser and turn both players’ lifepoints to 3000. Hence Soul Taker greatly helps to improve the Life Equaliser OTK(if you’ve heard of it)
Ways to counteract it:
Soul Taker is a spell card like all others, so the usual negaters will stop it, like Solemn Judgement, Dark Bribe. An interesting thing to do against a Soul Taker user would be to use Enemy Controller and tribute the targeted monster to gain control of your opponent’s monster. That way you gain 1000Lp and lose your EC but can protect yourself for the rest of the turn!!
Strengths/Pros:
-You can choose the target
-Soul taker is not limited or semi-limited
Weaknesses/Cons:
-Your opponent gains 1000Lp
Variations:
This card is only available as a secret rare(like DAD and JD) in the old Gladiator’s Assault booster pack. If you believe what others say, you only have a chance of obtaining one Soul Taker in 240 booster packs!! Tough luck eh?
Artwork and aesthetics:
The artwork is very well done, It depicts a witch-like creature reaching for the soul of another creature. Being a secret rare, it’s glittery all over, and hence even more stylish.
Overall rating:
A 9/10 for me. In my opinion, this card’s use will increase it the months to come as monster removal becomes a more important aspect of the game. Hope you all enjoyed this review!!
